3 Common Types of Kitchen Countertop Damage

Kitchen countertops see a lot of action throughout the day with all the chopping, slicing, mixing, and dicing that takes place on them. While most kitchen countertop materials are durable, they are not immune to damage. When your countertop is permanently scratched or stained, consider having it refinished rather than replaced. Tub Tile & Tops can refinish countertops of any shape, size, or material. When your countertops show signs of wear and tear due to the problems below, give us a call and we’ll be happy to refinish them to your liking.

3 Common Types of Kitchen Countertop Damage

1. Nicks & Scratches

Piled-up dishes, hot pots and pans, and kitchen knives all do their part in scratching up your kitchen counters. You can prevent tiny nicks and scratches from ending up on your counters by gently setting items down instead of sliding them across the surface. If you do end up with a nick or two, gently polish the surface to reduce their appearance.

2. Chemical & Food Stains

Chemical cleansers, spilled wine, and splattering oil can permanently stain your kitchen counters. Avoid staining the surfaces in your kitchen by first, using the right cleanser for the right materials, and second, cleaning up spills immediately. If you happen to find chemical or food stains, you can try a few homemade remedies. A paste of baking soda and acetone applied to an oil stain may lift the grease from the surface. Place a paper towel soaked in bleach on a food or wine stain to help remove the discoloration.

3. High-Temperature Discoloration

Countertops that are exposed to high heat lead to damage and discoloration. Sizzling pans and hot platters can leave behind black spots and cracks. Extreme heat can also weaken the sealer that has been applied to your kitchen countertops. To prevent this type of damage, simply place a trivet or potholder on the counter before setting down a hot dish or boiling pot.
